Rumours and misinformation quoted as fact in the name of “counter terrorism”. How one store fell prey to media spin and the ATF

Before even mentioning the quite obviously overhyped media spin that’s apparently called news on King5 (as found here and also reported here) which concerned an incident with Airsoft Outlet NW, it was appropriate to wait for the affected retailer to post up their thoughts on what’s gone on.

First here’s the original article that was posted on King5:

TACOMA, Wash. - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized a shipment of 30 machine guns that arrived in an ocean container at the Tacoma Seaport last October.

Officials say the shipment of M-4 automatic rifles, manifested only as "Toys and Parts," was valued at nearly $10,000 and was shipped from a manufacturer in Taiwan.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms found that the rifles were tooled to shoot plastic balls, but replacement of internal components with original machine gun components would render the rifles capable of firing live ammunition.

"These rifles could have had far-reaching and potentially devastating ramifications if they had gotten into the hands of individuals who wanted to do harm in the American population," said Customs and Border Protection Area Port Director, Rolando Suliveras, Jr. "This was a good interception by our officers."

The guns will be destroyed. (KING5.com)

To the skim reader that might sound like a good bit of news, after all terrorists were stopped importing illegal firearms, weren’t they?

Sadly this story is not about real firearms, but a shipment of airsoft WE M4 GBB replicas. From that single point of misinformation the author has then hypothesised what might happen should ne’er-do-gooders get hold of the believed killing machines that were being imported. It does somewhat remind me of a poor scientific hypothesis based on two points of collected data on a graph.

Complex import laws and the ATF’s seemingly irregular implementation of such legislation provides the perfect springboard for media channels to promote doom and gloom for their latest terrorist related story.

The victim of this media spin is Airsoft Outlet NW, a home grown store trading legally within the US. There’s now been a response from Airsoft Outlet NW. As you’d expect it is a well written article and explains a bit more about what was going on in the background:

We had 30 WE TTI M4 GBBR’s seized by the Port of Tacoma customs because they thought they were "machine guns". This is our response.

You can read their full response after the break and on their website here.

Here’s the story covered in their local TV channel:

There’s also a discussion about this in the news forum here.

Ares M82A1 Gas Blowback Airsoft Sniper Rifle Coming Soon

After all the releases of the Barrett M82A1 airsoft electric and spring replicas from last year, now it's Ares' turn to show their stuff and it's no surprise that they are coming out with the a gas version. With their track record of releasing gas rifles, then this is something to look forward to and strain our wallets with.  Also coming soon from Ares will be their M4 GBB series which we cannot say for now if it's gonna be compatible with the WE or WA GBB series. Hopefully pricing will be good.

Now, what we'll need to look forward to are the release dates for these niceties.

Airsoft Surgeon Tiger Cat Two-Tone Airsoft Pistol

Practical shooters can salivate over this Airsoft Surgeon Tiger Cat at RedWolf Airsoft, and it costs over a grand... "This high performance Open Class ISPC pistol is another great piece of work from Airsoft Surgeon master gunsmith Clarence Lai. Starting out as a Marui Hi-Capa gas blowback pistol, this Open Class TigerCat custom is a heavily tuned and modified race gun with CNC 6065 Aluminum slide and custom compensator. The custom compensator is truly unique in design with multiple ports.

Fine grooves from careful milling grace the front of the compensator that creates a nice contrast against the shiny side of the slide. Specially carved grooves make handling the slide easy. A super light cocking handle makes reloading super quick so you can lower your time! Custom magazine well has matching grooved finishing consistent with the theme of the gun. Finished in dual tone, this custom pistol is extremely eye catching. High performance scope rail houses a race-ready red dot sight for fast target acquisition. Custom hammer, PDI precision barrel and a host of other high performance parts make this a very fast gun.

A shock buffer prevents the slide from locking back to reduce cycling distance so that you can rapid fire off shots quicker than a standard gun (you can remove the shock buffer if you wish to have the slide lock back but professional IPSC shooters count their shots and know when they are out). Cracking out 360fps on a 0.2g BB, the gun is VERY crisp and the trigger loading is tuned just right to allow you to fire about 3-4 shots per second if you are fast. The slide cycles so fast that you cannot see it with the naked eye, though the crisp kick in your hand tells you that you've fired off the shot. The Tiger Cat feels like a precision instrument (and by all measure, it is). For the truly passionate shooter who wants the sharpest knife in the drawer!"

Dummy Garmin Foretrex 101 wrist GPS arriving next week

This one's for the COD MW2 fans who are looking for something affordable than the real deal from Garmin. Arriving on the 3rd of March (next week) at eBayBanned, it will be available for US$14. It's just a dummy, so you can just use it for your MW2 impressions, especially those kitchen komandos out there. But if you're serious at having the real deal, it's available for US$300 from some US retailers. It can run for 15 hours on 2 AAA batteries. We mean the real the Foretrex 101, not the dummy...you dummy!

M-2010 Shoulder Harness

You can configre this with other rigs from other brands. This is at CPGear for US$55... "The M-2010 Shoulder Harness is a further development of the KISS Rig Shoulder Harness based on user feedback. Designed to be compatible with the CPGear KISS Rig and M-2010 series of rigs, and the FASTRIG, it is also compatible with the Tactical Tailor MAV, and can be customized (for an additional fee) to work with any number of other chest rigs and harnesses on the market such as the SO Tech Hellcat series, ESSTAC Boar, Blackhawk Recon Chest Harness, and others.

Please contact info@cpgear or call 1-800-561-3040 for more details on custom adaptation options.

The M-2010 Shoulder Harness is designed as an unpadded, low profile harness that would minimize interference with proper shouldering of a rifle, and would allow backpack shoulder straps to be worn more effectively; no overlapping pads which create hotspots. The 3” width Mil-W-17337 webbing shoulder straps effectively distributes the load over a larger surface area.

Velcro secured flaps allow for routing of hydration tubes and comm wires so as to reduce snagging hazards. Each side of the shoulder harness features four 1” heavy duty metal welded D rings for attaching single point slings, chest rig bibs, hydration harnesses etc.

Rear of shoulder harness has 2 rows of 4 channel MOLLE – PALS compatible webbing for attaching hydration carrier pouches, or any other modular gear.

Drag handle is constructed of 2”webbing sewn in a reinforced ‘Box X' pattern for the strength and durability required for combat casualty extraction.

Shoulder harness is adjusted easily with 1.5” webbing straps at the front, and 1.5” ladderlock buckles at the rear; Rear ladderlocks make for easier strap adjustment by the user while the rig is worn.

Constructed of mil-spec materials such as Cordura nylon, webbing and hardware. Available in CADPAT TW, CADPAT AR, Coyote Brown, Multicam, and UCP – ACU (Universal) camouflage. Made in Canada and backed by CPGear's 5 year warranty."

Mines and grenades at RAP4

RAP4 have a range of mines and grenades to enhance your arsenal:

Real Action Paintball is proud to be your partner in battlefield simulation and creative defensive strategies. When you need dirty deeds done in style, you need our full line of compressed air powered simulated mines and booby trap-ready grenades. These special-purpose tools will eliminate your opponents in altogether new ways that will leave them nervous to get anywhere near your end of the field.

The RAP4 Pressure Activated Landmine is a reusable, compressed air powered, simulated landmine. A player stepping anywhere on the four inch diameter pressure plate will release the onboard charge of compressed air into a powder tray, blowing smoke simulation powder around their legs with a dramatic report. You can recess the mine an inch into the ground so it lies flat, and obscure it with a few leaves, or deploy it hastily in the corner of a bunker where they’re likely to stick their foot.

Want to establish a minefield? The RAP4 Pressure Activated Landmine is available in quantities of one, two, three, five, or save big on a purchase of ten. Pick up RAP4’s Mine Charger with 12gram Adapter for only $24.95, and recharge your mines and grenades up to fifteen times from a single 12gram!

The reusable M80 Landmine comes standard with smoke simulation powder, and optional burst tubes to add a really loud bang when this mine is detonated. Completely safe and paintball-compliant, they are designed to be buried shallow, and then set off with pressure from feet, vehicles, or objects being moved against them (like closing a door or moving an obstacle out of the way). The M80 is available at two price points, by size and features, to exactly meet your needs.

When you need to cover a large area with a single mine, or a series of them, check out RAP4’s M18A1 Claymore Mine. The M18A1 shoots 200 6mm airsoft BBs at a time, covering up to twenty meters upon “detonation”…and a single remote can trigger up to four mines individually.

When you need to rig a tripwire to cover a doorway, detonate a charge when a prop is removed, or otherwise surprise your opponents, look into the RAP4 Hand Grenade.

image

The RAP4 Hand Grenade is as real as you can get to a pineapple grenade, but completely safe and paintball-compliant. Charge it with the Thunder Grenade charger or the Mine Charger with 12gram Adapter, install the explosion-simulation powder disk, make sure the safety pin is holding the spoon down, and you’re ready to install the grenade in a sneaky location. Run a tripwire from the pin to a permanent anchor, and when it’s pulled, the pin comes out, the spoon flips up, and boom - they’re eliminated. You can adjust two internal pressure screws to make the delay from activation to detonation instantaneous, or several seconds long if you intend to let a room fill with opponents before eliminating them all at once.

RAP4 also carries the Mastermine, a refillable, reusable mine that sprays six ounces of liquid paint over a large section of trail - or a large room - to eliminate anyone who gets marked with even a drop. Rigged with a tripwire, this is a great option for games that require mines to leave a mark on opponents rather than merely simulating an explosion in their vicinity.

Whatever your scenario, RAP4 has a mine, booby trap, and grenade option just ready to be incorporated into your defensive scheme…

…and to keep your opponents guessing every time they reach for a prop. (RAP4)

U.S. Customs seizes shipment of WE M4 GBBR’s allegedly bound for Airsoft Outlet NorthWest

Hitting the airsoft world today is a story picked up by Seattle’s King5.com and Tacoma’s The News Tribune about a shipment of 30 WE M4 Gas Blowback airsoft rifles being detected and seized by US Customs and Border Protection.

Customs officials at the Port of Tacoma seized a shipment of 30 pellet guns that officialsCBP-seal say could have been modified into machine guns.

An investigation is under way after U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers discovered the Airsoft guns Feb. 8 in a suspicious-looking container. The shipment, labeled “Toys and Parts,” was worth about $10,000 and arrived at the port in October from a manufacturer in Taiwan, Customs and Border Protection spokesman Doug McBride said.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives determined that the rifles were equipped to shoot plastic balls but could be converted into machine guns firing live ammunition.

Ok, I didn’t want going to start on the obvious FUD being reported on here, and I can’t completely blame the news organisations for this, as they report on what they have been told and are not the experts unlike the BAFTE and CBP, but the implication that these seized airsoft rifles can be converted into firing live ammunition just astounds me.

I would be first in line (behind a bulletproof screen) to witness the carnage that would ensue from somebody attempting to detonate a .223 round in the alloy upper receiver of an M4 GBB, as unlikely as it would be with the absence of a firing pin and all the other essential parts of an AR-15 bolt to detonate a live round. The ludicrousness dissuades me from wanting to even touch on the other issues such as the barrel, the BCG and the dimensions of the WE receiver being incompatible with real steel tooling.

BATFE and CBP have experts in weaponry, and I have absolutely no doubt that they understand the mechanics of a toy GBB M4 and a Real Steel AR-15, why they would feed the media such obvious FUD boggles ones mind.

0224machien_guns_seized “You couldn’t tell by weight or feel” that the guns were fake, ATF spokeswoman Cheryl Bishop said. “Most people would be hard-pressed to tell the difference, and that’s why we were so concerned.”

The metal pellet guns had the same size, weight and appearance of an M-4 automatic rifle, the weapon used by the U.S. military. The rifles did not have serial numbers on them, as real guns would, but they also did not have the orange-blaze tip required for all imported toy guns.

“You could slide a magazine in there. They load and charge very realistically, very much like the real thing,” Bishop said.

The ATF also determined that the shipment did not arrive with the proper permits to enter the United States. The guns will be destroyed.

It would seem the sensationalism and FUD are unnecessary if you are to believe the reports that the rifles arrived in the US without the federally mandated blaze orange tip and improper permits for importation. If you just take those factors into consideration, it becomes a non-story.

What would have seemed to be a error of the clerical and shipping nature has been turned into a FUD based crusade by US Authorities for reasons that are kind of unclear and Seattle based news site, King5.com certainly doesn’t help the situation by incorrectly (in all intonations) referring to the toys as ‘Machine Guns’.

"These rifles could have had far-reaching and potentially devastating ramifications if they had gotten into the hands of individuals who wanted to do harm in the American population," said Customs and Border Protection Area Port Director, Rolando Suliveras, Jr. "This was a good interception by our officers."

FUD = Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt

The fact that the shipment arrived in the United States in October of last year and has only just been discovered, Feb 8th 2010, also raises questions.

An anonymous source has stated that the airsoft shipment was heading to Oregon based retailer Airsoft Outlet NorthWest, we have contacted Airsoft Outlet NW for confirmation but as of time of writing, although contacted us, have not released a statement concerning the seizure.

According to the Airsoft Outlet NW website, the owner of Airsoft Outlet Northwest will be addressing the news on the Lars Larson Show on 750 AM KXL at 2p.m. today.
